Whatever choice of Notebook PC you decide upon, please take note that your WiFi connection will depend on many factors and like the saying goes the "WEAKEST LINK" will ultimately determine your outcome on a particular Notebook PC in the actual components installed, in terms of RAM memory <= definitely buy one with at least 1 GB RAM and 2 GB if possible (it is also VERY IMPORTANT if you can only afford 1GB memory that you buy the system with 1 DIMM so you can later add the 2nd GB without discarding your original 1GB RAM). The CPU processor is equally important and cannot be less than PENTIUM M but $700 should get you a decent INTEL CPU, but to pickup the strongest signals the latest is INTEL PROSet Next Gen "N" quality in terms of built-in WiFi card.
For example With regard to WiFi normally when we go out of town on vacations we will carry 2 or 3 Dell Notebook PCs and I also carry (i) extra add-on WiFi Adapters for each Notebook PC as well as (ii) the LINKSYS SWITCH SD205 and ethernet cables so I can get all our home Dell Notebook PCs up and running, and different hotel suites have different internet setups...so I must be prepared
Also say you ended up settling for Wireless G built-in WiFi on the Notebook PC you did eventually buy, and later became very frustrated & angry bec the built in WiFi did not pick up signals, then I would recommend you buying is LinkSys USB WiFi adaptor: Linksys W300USB N WiFi <= about $80 to $90 bec currently highest "Wireless N capabilty" that when you would plug in via your USB port and after simple install, you will have no trouble picking all all available Networks...it also would work & have same success connecting when using your Notebook PC a Panera Bread, Borders Books or Starbucks, i.e any Free Hot Spot
Again why I believe your money would go much farther with a USB WifI adapter is the flexibility to move it to any computer (laptop or desktop) with USB ports, bec some of the newer Notebook PCs do not take the older PCMIA WiFi adapter but instead have an elongated Express slot.
