How long does a 50lb bag of feed last the average pleasure ridden horse?
I'm not at all new to horses, and I've owned before. I boarded at a barn that provided feed with the cost, so I never really had the experience of finding out how long a 50lb bag would last. Not long I know, lol. But I'm buying a horse in the coming months that will be kept on my personal property.
The way the feed was measured at the boarding barn, we used an average size coffee can. The horse I buy I can expect will consume about 3/4 to 1 can in the morning, and then in the evening, of course not including grazing and hay also through the day. Feeding like this, mind you just one horse. (:

I threw the word pleasure around a little bit there I think...while I wouldn't be riding extremely hard, I do ride alot. I also jump and barrel race. My last horse kept up a nice weight with grain and my riding before I sold her. Of course if the horse became a fatty I'd slack the grain off. (:
Feeding horses should not be by the scoop or by the flake of hay. Certain feeds/hay weigh more or less so it is not the desirable way to administer food. But to answer your question feeding around 5 lbs of grain a day (somewhere around there, this is just a ballpark number) would make one bag (50 lbs) last 10 days per one horse. Truly though feeding horses does not have to be complicated-once you get into a routine to see how your horse is adjusting (say maybe 2 or 3 weeks) take time to evaluate your feeding schedule and then adjust the amount you are feeding according to your observations. If your horse is getting thinner feed more (juvenile I know but really the truth) and if he is gaining weight feed less.... unless of course you are wanting him to gain or loose weight.... but yeah common sense really goes a long way in feeding horses..
