coffee diuretic effect Frequently Asked Questions

Does anyone know how caffeine effects edema?

I have edema in the legs and ankles. My doctor put me on Lasix. I drink lots of water every day. I try to drink half my body weight in water each day, sometimes not reach not achieve this objective. However, I must take at least 64 ounces per day. Now I'm on 5 days with Lasix and I still see some swelling in the ankles. Drink coffee. Probably too much coffee per day. Does anyone know if this not a good idea to do when you have edema? The reason I ask, because I'm not real clear on how does the swelling. I think my body may be storing more water because I'm dehydration, which is probably not helped by the caffeine in coffee. But caffeine is a diuretic, right? So if throwing water too. However, it seems even worse. Is this possible?

Yes, coffee is a diuretic, and I think it's the caffeine has this effect. I think you should consult your doctor about this - maybe something like Gatorade will help you stay hydrated without increasing edema.
