coffee grinder and maker Frequently Asked Questions
How do I clean my Coffee Maker?
My coffee maker is gross and stained and it's really starting to bother me. Problem is, I don't know how to clean it. My mother has already yelled at me several times to trying to clean my coffee grinder (I don't dirty things! so sue me!) Any tips?
I don't know if you mean stained outside or inside, but here goes...first, take your carafe scrub it inside and out with an SOS pad lightly. It will remove the residue and buildup from not washing it after each brew. When your carafe is clean, fill it with white vinegar and fill the coffee maker with it. Run it through a brew cycle. Turn your maker off and pour out the vinegar into the sink. Now take an old toothbrush and descale your heating element inside the water housing part of the maker. Now fill your carafe up with cold water and run a brew cycle again. Dump it out and do it one more time! That's about as clean as your maker will get.
To clean the exterior, use a paper towel and some Clorox clean up to bleach it lightly. Or, wash it with a soapy sponge and dry it. You can use the scotch brite green part of a sponge to lightly clean the element that the carafe sits on. Just don't scrub too hard, you'll remove the finish.
Is grinding coffee the night before defeating the purpose of buying coffee beans?
Both our grinder and our self-grinding coffee maker wake our baby up in the morning so we've been grinding it the night before. Buying the pre-ground stuff is cheaper so I was wondering if grinding it the ngiht before defeats the purpose of buying our fancy beans.
NO! It is not pointless, and here is why. A roasted coffee bean is it's own container, protecting the precious flavor filled oils inside. Once ground, coffee begins to become stale and will be completely stale in 20 minutes. While it is surely ideal to grind immediately prior to brewing your joe, it is truley much better to grind just enough the night before and store it in an airtight container immediately after it is ground than to buy preground coffee. Preground coffee is typically close to a year old! Do you really think they immediately package the coffee after its ground?! No, they do not it is already stale by the time it is packaged or canned.
