Can anyone explain facing to me SIMPLY? I'm new to sewing, and it's just so confusing!?
I'm preparing to do a 'dummy run' of this dress:

And somewhere in the instructions. it starts going on about facing. I understand that it's used to neaten up edges around necklines and sleeves, but the only tutorials i can find seem to assume i already know everything there is to know about sewing- they're so jargony!
Can anyone explain it to me simply? Or at least point me in the direction of somewhere that can?
Facing: a piece of fabric sewn in an opening to reinforce that opening and finish the opening edges. Before attaching facing to the garment, be sure to finish the edge that does not get sewn to the garment. This may be done by serging the edge, or by turning the edge under 1/4 inch and stitching it as in a "shirt-tail" hem. The facing is sewn in with the right sides of the fabrics (garment and facing) facing each other. When done, trim the seam allowance and clip the curved edges, but do not cut into the seam. Clipping the curves will allow the fabric to turn and not twist. Press the seam allowance toward the facing, then stitch 1/8 inch from the seam on the facing to sew seam allowance to facing. Turn facing to inside of garment and press. If this is an armhole facing tack the facing to the shoulder and side seams by hand to hold it in place. If this is a neck facing, tack it to the shoulder and back seams. I hope this is helpful to you.
