coffee yeast Frequently Asked Questions
Brewing with bakers yeast?
it tastes fine to me, i've made peach wine, and a whole lot of mead, and am now making hard cider. everywhere i seach everyone says it's terrible, but me and my freinds like the baking yeast brew.
btw i don't even know where youd get brewers yeast
and also, anybody ever make coffee beer? im thinking of disolving a whole lot of sugar into coffee and fermenting it. how do yall think it'll turn out? and yes i know it's not technically beer cause we're not making malt out of the coffee, but yeah, close enough, i doubt it could be considered wine because we're adding sugar
Bakers yeast doesnt provide the alcohol tolerance. There are scores of online brewing supply shops if none are in your town.
Coffee beer? Please, try molasses first. Or any other fruit juice. Even Welch's grape juice makes a pretty drinkable wine.
Buy yourself a few good books on brewing.
Can I make my own beer with a coffee machine?
I read on the internet that you could but the internet says a lot of things. I don't want to buy a kit, I'd rather find the malt and barley myself but don't know where they sell it. Water, sugar and yeast is easy enough but any help welcome.
And hops
Sorry, you cannot use a coffee machine.
And, it is called "malted barley" not "malt and barley." Barley is obviously a grain which grows and is harvested. To malt the barley you let it sprout a little bit then cook it to stop it from growing (ie, kill it). Then you have "malted barley" -- barley with little plants sticking out of it. To make beer from this, you have to crack it (at home a rolling pin works), and then boil it. The sugars come out of the malted barley during this process, and you can then discard the malted barley and then let the beer ferment. Obviously in the boiling, you would add hops to the liquid (called wort). After it stops boiling and comes down to about 90F you can transfer the wort into a fermenting bucket, throw in the yeast and seal it up (add the airlock, of course); wait 1-2 weeks, rack it into a bottling bucket with priming sugar, bottle it up and you've got yourself some nice homebrewed beer in about 2 weeks (to bottle condition).
You can buy malted barley (cracked or whole), as well as hops and all the supplies you need at a homebrew supply shop -- either local or online. The startup kit usually costs between $70 and $100.
The raw materials to brew 5 gallons of beer usually cost $35. You can see that getting 50 bottles of beer for $35 is a steal, just under $18 a case. And this is the good beer, not some Bud Light clone.
Trust me, if you want to get into homebrewing it is a worthwhile adventure. You'll save a ton of money after just a few batches of beer, enough so that the kit pays for itself in no time. Get a couple of friends to go in with you on this, can all decide what to brew and share the cost. Obviously you need to take turns, there is only one fermenting bucket that you need to use for about 2 weeks per batch (depending on the style and activity of the yeast).
