Running a church hospitality team???
I am about to take over as the leader of my church hospitality team. Our main duties at the moment include catering events and providing refreshments at the end of church services. It's an important ministry as it's one of the ways in which we would like to value the community when they visit and also make ourselves more culturally relevant. Trying to create a coffee house atmosphere etc.
The only problem is at the moment after the service things are still a little bit old fashioned. While people do get nice coffees etc I still want to modernise it a bit.How would you do this?
Disposable cups? This means people can still get a coffee if they need to leave quickly. I also thought using lids would make things a bit safer with lots of kids running around.
Also having some problems with volunteers, people just don't show up! Meaning others have to work every single week which just isn't fair.
Any ideas on how to combat this particular issue?

The church I grew up in and attended for many years after, had what was called - Coffee Hour, which followed the service. It was held downstairs in Fellowship Hall.
Normally, two or three tables were lined up and the women's group would call upon different people for each week asking them to prepare "finger foods" for Coffee Hour. Some brought coffee cakes, others brought in finger sandwiches with an assortment of Tuna Fish, Egg Salad, and at times, a few "hoagies" or "subs" depending on where you live were also provided and cut into small servings. There were also donut holes and bagels with a variety of spreads. Fruit juice was provided for the children and adults who did not prefer coffee or tea.
Disposable cups are fine, and make for clean up even easier time.
The coffee hour was put into the service bulletin each week for service and the minister also announced and invited everyone for coffee hour and fellowship following service.
The children ran around and played, adults would mingle and talk, and it allowed everyone to visit with each other and catch up on events with everyone, that normally a busy week might prohibit the visiting of for each person to get with each person.
New friends were made, visitors felt welcome and it was also a for them to get to know the rest of the congregation.
Nothing was made fancy, rather it was kept very simple. But the end results were always bountiful - people left when they were ready to leave and always with smiles on their faces, laughter being heard.
The perk side of doing it the way it was done where I grew up, was by asking for volunteers to bring in different finger foods, it in a sense provided a light lunch as well - which was especially a hit for the children who normally would be tugging at their parents to go home to eat. In this light, the children had nourishment and were able to visit with their friends, etc. as well.
In all my years, I've never seen a person leave without a smile on their face or a new bounce to their step.. all because for about an hour following service, there was a gathering where people were able to come together in Christian fellowship with each other.
